Revealing the Obscured Supernova Remnant Kes 32 with Chandra
نویسنده
چکیده
I report here on the analysis and interpretation of a Chandra observation of the supernova remnant Kes 32. Kes 32 is rather weak in X-rays due to a large interstellar absorption, which is found to be ∼ 4 × 10 cm, larger than previously reported. Spectral analysis indicates that the ionization age of this object is very young, with net ∼ 4×10 9 cms, and a temperature of kTe ∼ 1 keV. The X-ray emission peaks at a smaller radius than in the radio. The low ionization age suggests that Kes 32 is a young remnant. However, a young age is in contradiction with the relatively large apparent size, which indicates an age of several thousand years, instead of a few hundred years. This problem is discussed in connection with Kes 32’s unknown distance and its possible association with the Norma galactic arm. HRI observation of the supernova remnant Kes 32 and the nearby radio pulsar PSR B 1610 − 50
We present the results of a deep ROSAT HRI observation of the supernova remnant Kes 32 and the possibly associated pulsar PSR B1610-50. The supernova remnant shows strongly energy dependent complex structures in a comparison with the ASCA GIS and ROSAT PSPC data with low foreground absorption (NH ∼ 5 × 1021 cm−2). The pulsar is not seen in the HRI image indicating a high absorbing column densit...
متن کاملA Compact Central Object in the Supernova Remnant Kes 79
A Chandra X-ray observation has detected an unresolved source at the center of the supernova remnant Kes 79. The best single-model fit to the source spectrum is a blackbody with an X-ray luminosity L X (0.3-8.0 keV)=7×10 33 ergs s −1. There is no evidence for a surrounding pulsar wind nebula. There are no cataloged counterparts at other wavelengths, but the absorption is high. The source proper...
متن کاملThe Thermal Composite Supernova Remnant Kes 27 as Viewed by Chandra: Shock Reflection from a Cavity Wall
We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic study of the thermal composite supernova remnant Kes 27 with Chandra. The X-ray spectrum of Kes 27 is characterized by K lines from Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Ca. The X-ray emitting gas is found to be enriched in sulphur and calcium. The broadband and tri-color images show two incomplete shell-like features in the northeastern half and brightness fading wit...

متن کاملChandra View of Kes 79: a Nearly Isothermal Snr with Rich Spatial Structure
A 30 ks Chandra ACIS-I observation of Kes 79 reveals rich spatial structures, including many filaments, three partial shells, a loop and a “protrusion”. Most of them have corresponding radio features. Regardless of the different results from two non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) codes, temperatures of different parts of the remnant are all around 0.7 keV, which is surprisingly constant for a rem...
